Herbs and Foods for Hyperthyroidism

There are many herbs, foods and spices that help decrease the symptoms of Hyperthyroid.

Here we will focus on what kind of plants or foods work best and how they assist during Hyperthyroid (HyperT).

Much of our discussion will be plants that help decrease inflammation and decrease symptoms of auto-immune disease.

Herbs to Help Hyperthyroid Symptoms

  1. Bugleweed helps normalize rapid heart rates usually a symptom of HyperT. Use as a tea: 2g herbs in one cup of boiling water, steep for 10-20 minutes, strain and cool; drink up to 2-3 times daily. Not recommended if pregnant or lactating.
  2. Motherwort, Leonurus cardiac, also, normalizes heart rates and helps with thyroiditis. You may use this as a tea also.
  3. Dragonbone and oystershell are good for tremors seen during HyperT due to loss of calcium.
  4. Eleuthero helps with both Hyperthyroid and Hypothyroid and mainly affects the Hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis which helps during stressful situations. This herb provides immune system support and helps the adrenal glands.
  5. Lemon balm or Melissa Officinalis, helps support thyroid and normalizes the accelerated hormones in Hyperthyroidism. A dose of 300-500 mg 3 times /day may be effective. Or prepare a tea.
  6. Prunella is the most Chinese used herb for this disorder. This is a fire purging, regulatory Qi to calm and clear heat. Prunella is given to resolve accumulation or masses in the upper body; including the thyroid swellings or goiters.
  7. Pumice, powdered stone, used by the Chinese. to clear heat from lungs, for goiter and for heat in the urinary tract.
  8. Thallus, a Kelp or Kombu, is another Chinese herb used for inflammation of glands. It is also used by Western herbalist to regulate the thyroid function.
  9. Echinacea, used by Kerry Bone, a well -known herbalist, is recommended for auto- immune conditions as an important component in natural treatment protocol.
  10. Ashawganda, an herb from India, is an adaptagenic herb and benefits by helping body cope with stress.

Stress in the body responds to physical, chemical and environmental toxins in our world today. Ashawganda also assists the immune system.

  1. Green tea may be of benefit in hyperthyroidism because of its antioxidant effect. This helps with the immune system response. Drink Green tea in moderation since over-consuming can increase caffeine level.
  2. Several other herbs of good use are Rehmannia, an aid to the immune system. Hemidesmus, an herb that also suppress the auto immune response, especially for Graves or Hashimoto’s disease.

Spices for Hyperthyroid

  1. Ginger promotes health with benefits from minerals, zinc, magnesium and potassium. Many of these minerals become deficient in thyroid disease. It is also an anti-inflammatory.
  2. Turmeric may be one of the most efficient defenses for thyroid. Due to its anti-oxidant capabilities, soothes and decreases inflammation.
  3. Cinnamon has an inhibitory effect on bacteria, specifically Pylori, due to its compound, cinnaldehyde. Studies show H.Pylori is a possible trigger of auto-immune thyroid disease. Cinnamon compounds help with gastric inflammation due to these bacteria.
  4. Sage many people with thyroid diseases have memory and concentration problems and sage helps with oxidative stress and free radical damage.

Foods Beneficial for Hyperthyroidism

  1. Thyroid conditions have been linked to a health problem called leaky gut. Leaky gut is where a protein i.e. gluten, can leak through the wall of the gut into the bloodstream causing inflammation. This is also, the start of auto immune disease.

Consume probiotic foods to help overcome this situation. For instance, Kefir, Kombucha, Yogurt, cultured vegetables or Natto.

  1. Proteolytic Enzymes reduce inflammation; especially for autoimmune disorders. One example is Bromelain, used to reduce thyroid inflammation.
  2. Foods high in Vitamin B12 or thiamine are needed. Helps balance your hormones naturally.

The B12 foods include raw cheese and milk, eggs, salmon, sardines and grass feed beef. Thiamine, which supports metabolism are asparagus, sunflower and sesame seeds, flaxseed and crimini mushrooms.

  1. Fresh Cruciferous vegetables can help with an over-producing thyroid. These include broccoli, kale, brussel sprouts, and cauliflower. These goitrogenic foods, along with soy, help to decrease hormone levels. Although this can also backfire; by reversing to hypothyroid.

The best recommendation to help the thyroid is to eat these vegetables cooked or fermented. Soy, also a goitrogenic food, is best in fermented form and grown by Non-GMO seed.

  1. Flaxseed is good to boost thyroid hormone ratio.
  2. Focus on Omega3’s which repair damaged cells and helps thyroid function better. They are anti-inflammatory which can prevent problems with all other organs not just your thyroid. Omega 3 foods include walnuts, fish, chia and flax seeds and hemp seed or fish oil supplement.
  3. Melatonin from foods or supplements assists with immune response and with sleep or insomnia issues. These are common symptoms with hyperthyroid.

Melatonin compounds are found in common fruit and veggies, highest amounts in cherries, grapes and tomatoes. Even some Melatonin is in olive oil, wine and beer.

  1. Foods high in Selenium are critical to help balance out T4 thyroid hormone. A very powerful anti-oxidant, selenium, is consumed in nuts, sardines, halibut, eggs, spinach, and grass feed beef.

Foods and Herbs to Avoid with Hyperthyroid

  1. If you have allergies, any food you are allergic to can worsen hyperthyroid symptoms. Potential suspects are dairy, gluten, soy, corn, artificial additives.
  2. Limit high glycemic carbohydrates, they can interfere with metabolism. Keep blood sugar in normal ranges, since diabetes is strongly linked to thyroid problems.

Stay away from processed foods like white bread, any floury baked goods or sweet cereals.

Instead choose fiber rich food with lower glycemic levels such as, whole grains, oatmeal, quinoa, lentils or yams.

  1. People with Graves are more sensitive to Gluten There is a high percentage of celiac disease found typically with auto immune disorders.
  2. High fat meat with saturated fat increase cholesterol and is associated with both Hyperthyroid and Hypothyroid disease. Unhealthy fat increase inflammation.
  3. Aspartame, artificial sweetener substitute, even though approved by the FDA, has side effects. Studies reveal aspartame is capable of stimulating onset of Graves; one of the most common causes of Hyperthyroidism.
  4. Dairy reduces the effectiveness of thyroid medication.

In summary, the use of any or all of the above herbs or foods can help restore health to someone with a Hyperthyroidism issue.

These do help with controlling symptoms and decreasing Thyroid hormone levels.
